A Case Filed Against Rex Tillerson for Using an Alias Email at the Oil Company

As per a report submitted by the New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, the U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. Rex Tillerson, who was the chief executive and chairman of Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N), was using an alias email address while working at the firm. This email address was used by him to receive and send climate change queries and other matters.

On Monday, a letter was submitted by the New York attorney general’s office. The officials explained that they had discovered that Rex had used a fake email address from the year 2008 to at least 2015 under the pseudonym Wayne Tracker. that Wayne is Rex Tillerson’s middle name.

This letter was submitted to a New York state judge, who is overseeing the matter, to conclude if Schneiderman’s company Exxon misled its shareholders and public in general about climate change.

Exxon spokesman Mr. Alan Jeffers gave out a statement on Monday stating, “The email address, Wayne.Tracker@exxonmobil.com, is part of the company’s email system and was put in place for secure and expedited communications between select senior company officials and the former chairman for a broad range of business-related topics.”

Alan Jeffers said that Exxon Mobil Corp had provided over 2.5 M pages of reports as a response to a summon from Eric Schneiderman’s office and the company will respond to the accusation present in the letter during the court filings.

When a State Department spokeswoman was asked to comment on this matter, she declined to do so.

The letter read that Exxon hadn’t previously disclosed on the matters of the alias email. It asked the state judges to demand Exxon to give a valid explanation of whether the reports from the alias account (Wayne Tracker) and the 34 other accounts allocated to other board members and executives of Exxon had been conserved.

The letter alleged that Exxon Corp had submitted around 60 odd documents bearing the email address of Wayne Tracker, but the company never explained that this account was used by Rex for communications at the firm.

The letter asked the state court to instruct Exxon to disclose other email accounts used by Tillerson.

“Exxon’s top executives, and in particular, Mr. Tillerson, have made multiple representations that are at the center of OAG’s (attorney general’s office) investigation of potentially false or misleading statements to investors and the public,” it said.

The appeal is People of the State of New York v/s PricewaterhouseCoopers and Exxon Mobil Corporation, the New York State-Supreme-Court, the New York County, Number 451962/2016.
